About our Group

The NBAC is a small group, as astronomy clubs go. At the present time we number merely a dozen active participants, plus a few other interested friends and former members. We started our website in 2005. We update our Website newsletter monthly and Astronomy news weekly .

Our club is small but it’s friendly. We charge no membership fee, and have no treasury. We do welcome every interested person to sit and gab (and coffee) with us at our bimonthly meetings.

We don’t call in professional speakers but, at each meeting, we talk about the night sky and the nature of things, as well as our pragmatic concerns about star party sites and meetings. Recently we gabbed for awhile about speeds: the spinning Earth, our solar and galactic orbits. “When you returned home this afternoon, your home was 35 million miles from where it was when you headed out the door.” That sort of thing.

Sometimes, we talk about our telescopes, or new eyepieces, etc. And we’re always offering to help someone learn to use such equipment. One of our favorite stories is the recent case where a youngster, saying he has a new telescope, asked our club chairman how to use it. Dan replied with a question to the boy, “What type of telescope is it?” To which the lad helpfully responded, “It’s black.”

We have a history, too. Our club was founded in May, 1997, meeting first at the New Braunfels Senior Citizens Center, then later meeting at the newly built New Braunfels Public Library, and now we gather once every two months at a New Braunfels restaurant for dinner, followed by a casual conversation about topics ranging from star party information to upcoming meteor showers or other celestial events, spacecraft missions, new telescopes, new discoveries in space -- anything of interest around the table. Often it’s been just eight or ten folks getting together.

If you’re reading this and you are interested, you’ve passed muster! We would be delighted to have you pull up a chair, join us. Just give us a call to learn our plans for the next meeting on the calendar.
